Adding to that, 71% of businesses say they have not identified a clear use case for AI in their organisation.
Read those two numbers together and you get the real story of UK AI adoption in 2026. It is also why the headlines keep getting louder while the results stay quiet. Spend on AI is up. Pilots are running everywhere. But most teams cannot articulate what they are actually trying to do with the tools they have bought.
That is not a technology problem.
What "AI skills" actually means
When businesses say "skills", they tend to mean "our people do not know how to use ChatGPT." But the skills gap is wider than that. It breaks down into at least four areas:
- Prompt craft. Knowing how to ask AI tools the right questions. This is the most visible gap and the easiest to close.
- Workflow design. Knowing where AI fits into existing processes. Which tasks benefit from AI? Which do not? This requires understanding the work, not just the tool.
- Output validation. Knowing how to check what AI produces. Facts, tone, completeness. This is the skill most people skip, and the one that causes the most damage.
- Tool selection. Knowing which AI tool to use for which task. Copilot for email summaries, ChatGPT for research, a specialist tool for image generation. Most people use one tool for everything.
Training that only covers prompt craft misses three quarters of the problem.
Training changes the shape of work
One small piece of context from the same study. Companies that have invested in proper AI training are three times more likely to be restructuring how work gets done.
Training does not just teach the tool. It changes the shape of the work. Which is the bit nobody is talking about loudly enough.
A team that has been trained does not just write better prompts. They start asking different questions: which tasks should we stop doing manually? Where are we duplicating effort? What would this process look like if we designed it with AI in mind?
That is the shift from adoption to transformation. It does not happen by accident, and it does not happen by buying more licences.
